Your advocacy efforts have paid off!
Four Part B MACs have finalized LCDs for “Peripheral Nerve Injections and Procedures for Chronic Pain”:
As you may remember, all four proposed LCDs would have limited steroid injections for Morton’s neuroma to a maximum of two per lifetime, per side. Following advocacy from APMA, CAC representatives, and state associations in these MAC jurisdictions, that lifetime limit was removed from the final policies. This would not have been possible without your participation in open meetings and contributions to our comments.
The final policies do not limit steroid injections to the posterior tibial nerve for tarsal tunnel syndrome. They do, however, limit steroid injections for Morton’s neuroma to one per side, per encounter.
The policies also consider an anesthetic block of the posterior tibial nerve at the tarsal tunnel for chronic pain investigational and non-covered. An anesthetic digital nerve block for chronic pain, such as anesthetizing a toe, is also non-covered.
This outcome highlights the importance of engaging with MACs, coordinating with CAC and PIAC representatives and state associations, working alongside other physician organizations, and sharing information with APMA and members in your states.
